After treating over 30,000 patients in my clinics, the results are clear.
The public is often uncertain about what to believe. Even the medical profession can be uncertain about what to prescribe for hormone replacement therapy and how to minimize complications. These days, there is more education available to everyone that wants to know the pro's and con's of using hormones. Doctors are more informed than in years prior and the public can get a lot of good information between the internet and publications that will spell it out.
All patients should know as much as their providers when it comes to hormones.
It is your body, your health, and your money. Be an informed consumer. It may save your life!
A controversy has been never ending when it comes to natural hormones and homeopathic hormones, versus synthetic and manufactured hormones. Over the years, people suffered needlessly from the issues created by manufactured hormones. Incidences of cancer, deeper hormonal imbalances, blood clots, heart attacks, mood disorders, and more, were common even just 10 years ago.
It took the Women's Health Initiative movement to bring corrections to the medical use of synthetic hormones. Unfortunately, the movement did not address synthetic medications for men. Thus, the positive outcomes were more protective of women.
Today, there are a variety of new medications which remain synthetic and some that integrate "natural" substances in the mix, to improve the medication. These medications come from big pharmaceutical companies, that are well known. While there are inspections and certifications given to these companies, the products are, what they are, and consumers need to ask the right questions before using them.
Men are using much of the same product line as earlier times. There are severe risk factors for some of these products. Interestingly, medications that reduce the risk factors, are often unavailable to patients because of the lack of knowledge by the provider on how to use them. Sometimes, these risk reducing products are minimized by drug manufacturers and their sales agents, because they are not mass produced or do not fall in line with what the FDA advocates is correct medicine. Getting the right doctor and pre-treatment counsel is extremely important for men. The ill effects of poor hormone treatment, can be disastrous.
Getting proper counseling is highly recommended for anyone seeking hormone replacement therapy. A small investment before you place yourself in the hands of a provider, is prudent, when it comes to HRT.
The Myths About Hormones
I. Estrogen is a single hormone. In women, estrogen is best referred to as a group of hormones. Estrogen occupies several amounts of volume and is adjusted accordingly in a proper program. Synthetic medications can not do this as accurately as bio-identical or natural hormones, according to experts like Dr. Wright MD, proponent of bio-identical hormones.
II. Estrogen replacement alone, is sufficient medical intervention. In fact, both estrogen and progesterone are adjusted to a correctly identified ratio of each.
Progesterone is necessary to create safety and efficacy of estrogen. It also promotes anti-cancer and endometrial health. Synthetic products have been reported to be less effective as compared to bio-identical progesterone. Something to review carefully before getting treatment.
III. Estrogen cannot make dramatic repairs after application if its started too late. There are claims that osteoporosis can be reversed or even cured. If osteoporosis is progressive before estrogen, it cannot be cured by the estrogen, for instance. An example of an influential therapy for bones would be the addition of DHEA and/or testosterone, based on clinical evidence.
IV. Bio-identical hormones cannot be absorbed easily. The fact is that the absorption of these products is excellent and can be modified by the pharmacist. There is no advantage to synthetic products and absorption.
V, Testosterone and androgenic hormones are for men only. It is essential for androgen hormones be used in both women and men. These hormones are critical to the health and longevity of the patient.
VI, Manufactured, synthetic hormones are better than bio-identical because they are approved by the government. False. This is not true. In fact, there are many patients and physicians that feel, based on medical results and success, that bio-identical hormones are better.
VII. Estrogen levels are not of concern in men. False. Estrogen can induce many ill effects in men, whether they use testosterone or not. Estrogen elevation can increase the risk of cancer, especially breast cancer, influence obesity, reduce libido and sexual performance, induce depression and mood problems, and more. Because the government does not support estrogen suppression in men, this situation remains more common than it should be. Some providers who are well advised about it, can treat the condition with medication.
VIII. Testosterone will create aggression and violence. This claim is absurd. Testosterone is a necessary and vital hormone that can be elevated without the concerns of mood and personality changes. There is as much clinical evidence that it is not cancer inducing nor creates heart disease, as the negative reports in the industry. In some individuals, there may be a sensitivity to the synthetic nature of the testosterone product. In those individuals, high blood pressure, acne, and other issues can be evoked. It has to be managed on an individual basis.
IX. Testosterone therapy is the only type of medical intervention for low amounts of testosterone in a male. This is not true. Other methods exist to increase the testosterone levels in men, which come from the testes and not from testosterone itself. This approach is not widely known by medical providers. Fact is, that HCG (human chorionic gonadotropin will reverse the failing testicles and create better functions. Doctors claim HCG is only for women, but for years, HCG has been used effectively for this condition and also, for the reduction of body fat.
